Guarantee the long term continuity of JPE
JPE has been unique since its creation in 2009 in being open access but free to publish – following the diamond open access (OA) model. To ensure the journal´s viability in the long term, we need to create some revenues. Different attempts to get JPE adopted by another non-profit publisher or a society were not fruitful or would have meant giving up our publishing freedom or values.
We are happy and grateful to receive financial support from the International Commission of Plant Pollinators Relationships (ICPPR), that especially enabled the long-necessary upgrade of the OJS (Open Journal Systems) submission system last year. However, this upgrade came along with the subscription to continuing support. So, there is an urgent need to raise money and build a sustainable financial future for JPE.
After long reflection, we decided to opt for – as we think - very reasonable article processing charges (APCs) of 250 €. The idea is to make them a voluntary contribution for authors who can afford it, accounting for the fact that others will not be able to pay. We publish many excellent papers from low-income countries and are very proud of it. We will implement it for manuscripts submitted from June 1st, 2022.
